The DOS boot screen, the sloppy menu, and the interface reminiscent of those games — when the developers of modern games try to cause nostalgia, there is always a chance that some sort of bad taste will come out. But here everything is done as if Carmack Twenty years ago, I got access to later technologies, created the coolest shooter, but did not tell anyone about it — and only now this game was discovered and released on Steam by someone.
Armed with two sickles, the main character finds himself in a dungeon. The room is very tiny, there is nothing to shoot, and three farmers run at us with bags on their heads and chainsaws in their hands. Already at this moment you begin to understand what awaits you ahead — in DUSK I do not want to stand still, and the game does not encourage it.
Quite the contrary — the faster you move, the less chance there is to catch a bullet or a magic projectile.
It is necessary to deal with farmers and explore the walls, when suddenly you notice the first secret — a hidden gun. If you know that he is there, it will be a little easier to fight with distraught rednecks.To meet such creatures in the dark corridor is not very pleasant. After this, the arsenal continues to grow: after a couple of minutes, the hero holds two pistols, then finds a shotgun, then another shotgun (you can also shoot them with two hands). DUSK allows you to feel like a powerful superhero of militants who never reloads their weapons, and if you press the R key, the protagonist will spectacularly rotate the cannon on his finger and go on.
Later, he will get a rifle, a bow, and a grenade launcher with a rocket launcher — it will not be boring for sure.
Level design in the game deserves special praise. The task is almost always the same — to get to the final, collecting key cards of different colors along the way. But how many different locations are there!
It all starts on terrible farms with corn fields and sheds, continues in the industrial zone, and ends in some kind of hell in an alternate reality. That character is in a large open location, then transferred to the laboratories connected by corridors, then goes underground and sneaks through tunnels with a flashlight in his teeth, which can cause claustrophobia even to those who have never encountered it before.
Atmosphere in DUSK sinister and even uncomfortable. There are no monsters jumping out from around the corner and other nonsense — unpleasant sensations arise in those moments when nothing happens and the player tries to find another key or find the next door. Frightening rustles and sighs, fearful opponents and visual design as a whole, if they do not freeze your soul, like horror films, then at least in some episodes make you feel uncomfortable.

The character moves very quickly, "jumping" and "rocketjump" work exactly the way you expect from them, and if necessary, you can not only bend down, but also make tackles. Not only in DUSK You can push some objects or take them in hand to throw at opponents or move them to another place.
Boxes, barrels and other trash will certainly be useful to those who like to study every corner in search of secrets (and they are found here at every level).
The very same shooting is no less gorgeous — if you study the secret locations, access to powerful types of weapons can be obtained long before they are issued on the "plot". Among the enemies, there are demon-stricken cultists, farmers, soldiers, skeletons, and many other people and creatures, each of whom will eventually find the right approach and quickly switch between guns in order to quickly deal with them. It is difficult to call their design as memorable as in the same Doom, but the way they address a character in an unknown language or in English is pronounced “heretic” and “unfaithful” will sit in your head for a long time.
When there are ten or more opponents on the screen, instead of terrible sighs and squeaks heavy metal begins to sound Andrew Halchulia (Andrew Hulshult). Opponents behave differently depending on the weapon in their hands, the cool lighting provided makes the locations more atmospheric, the soldiers and the monsters fly away nicely after death or fly at all to pieces. At the end of the level, the time of passing, the number of enemies killed and the number of secrets discovered are shown — for those who want to do speedran or once again explore all the locations for invisible buttons and walls that can be passed through.
Probably the only negative DUSK associated with the "bosses" — for a long time to shoot at these creatures with a huge stock of lives is not always fun. But with the presence of rocket launchers it is almost always possible to quickly destroy them.
Not quite successful can be called a multiplayer mode. It is not bad, it is just the most ordinary and straightforward fight to the death, in which you are unlikely to stay long. From time to time it is possible to enter it — the maps here are relatively spacious, and there are enough weapons and first-aid kits for them to run and have the same fun as in the single-player campaign.
However, with the new DOOM, that the online mode here seems just a small bonus, which is why it will not spoil the impression, but will not be surprised — it just exists. The storyline (if you can call it that) includes three dozen different levels, and they are enough to regret the four hundred and nineteen rubles spent on Steam did not have to.
Not so often in shooters they let you shoot two shotguns. ***DUSK once again confirms that a great game does not always need a heaped graphics and dozens of developers. Its creator David Szymanski (David Szymanski) is clearly in love with Doom, Quake, Duke nukem, Heretic, Hexen, Blood and other classic games and wanted to offer something similar to the audience. As a result DUSK very similar not so much to these masterpieces as to our memories of them.
