Occasionally, discussions that video games are evil, propaganda of violence, and the cause of various atrocities have long been accepted to be accepted with a little bit of drama. On the other hand, if you look at what is happening in virtually every game with an innocent eye, you can see that this violence itself is really enough. Fights, murders, robberies and other antisocial acts, even if sometimes performed with the best of intentions, were and are the focus of attention of the vast majority of video games.

To talk about the value of human life, about the boundaries of the right to violence and similar awkward topics not every developer can venture far. 11-11: Memories Retold, released Bandai Namco Entertainment on the eve of the centenary since the end of the First World War — just about that.

All went to the front

1916 While the fire of the war that has been going on for two years is still burning in Europe, ordinary peaceful life lasts in Canada, for which the fights and the daily deaths of thousands of people in some places far beyond the ocean remain only dry lines in the news reports. Harry, a young man, lives in Toronto and works as an assistant photographer. The war interests him much less than the daughter of the owner of the studio — Julia.

In one beautiful autumn day, her not-so-ordinary guest enters her dad: a stately military man full of merit — Major Barrett, a real war hero. After a small photo shoot, he makes a tempting offer to Harry — they say your photographer’s abilities vainly disappear into the dullness and lack of everyday life, but there will always be stories for such talent on the front. In addition, it is a chance to become famous, well, the girls love the young men in uniform — Julia, who melted from the 1st glance of the major, will not let you lie.

Apparently, Barrett hit the nail on the head — well, do you really need a youngster who knows only war from books and newspapers?

Now Harry is a front-line photographer who sets off to Europe for the “most real war,” where he can certainly show himself, and when he returns, Julia will look at him exactly like a major that day …

Germany, a military factory for the production of airships, in which the main work is already mature men — all the young people in the army, like most of the offspring workers. By the joyous coincidence of events, many of them serve in the same detachment. But at one point, terrible news arrives at the plant — sixteen people from this unit went missing after a hard battle on the Western Front. 11-11: Memories Retold Game ReviewKurt is mainly busy talking with comrades and helping them in hard soldier’s work.

If other fathers accepted the loss and began to hope for magic — suddenly someone survived, then Kurt, one of the workers whose son Max was in the midst of these fighters , unable to cope with the unknown. There is only one method to answer the question of whether Max is alive or died the death of the brave — to go to the service himself, trying to find a son in the abyss of war.

Kurt leaves his wife and small daughter at home, enrolls in the army and after some time becomes an ordinary military engineer on the Western Front. He is here for the sole purpose of finding his own son and returning home to his family, or, if fate turns out to be so cruel, at least to find his grave and know for sure that the son is no longer alive. Service for Kurt is only a tool for achieving the goal, while the war for the Fatherland, patriotic appeals and heroism remain worthless words …

Two people who are different from each other, each with their own aspirations and desires, among whom there was no place for dreams of 10 killed opponents and heroic deeds, are drawn into the whirlpool of a majestic war that will bring them together. Will they manage to save themselves and return home?

The decision of the fate of Kurt and Harry — on the conscience of the player. Specifically, he will manage both characters, and often switch between them at any time that is necessary for the upcoming passage. 11-11: Memories Retold Game ReviewVery soon, Harry will understand that war is not only an order and a beautiful form. Push ({})11-11: Memories Retold — traditional adventure. The gameplay is straightforward and is mostly a journey through locations, interspersed with performing easy tasks and solving simple puzzles. Open the passage, pushing the drawer, find the keys to unlock the door — nothing so special, at first glance.

But not everything is so simple — thanks to the imagination of the developers with the help of easy techniques it is possible to resurrect the game quite a lot, making it something more tremendous than an ordinary linear adventure.

For example, Harry always has a camera at hand, which at any time can be used for its intended purpose. They allow photographing anything, but certain objects are highlighted separately — their pictures can be used to reveal the plot. In general, nothing prevents "clicking" the world around us as you please, without forgetting, in general, about the daily limit of sixteen frames. Surprisingly, in fact, it does not matter which photograph comes out on the uniqueness of a successful one — they can be viewed at any time in the menu. The same photo Harry sends to Julia, and what specific photo to send in a letter, you can also choose.

The answers of the girl, by the way, vary depending on the card sent.

Kurt does without a camera, but he also likes to write letters. The more he talks to others and travels around the locations, the more he has for those close to him for news. To lie to a small daughter or write a serious truth to her, to encourage her relatives or to prepare them for the worst — to choose a player.

The rest of the gameplay, as already mentioned, does not represent anything noticeable and can only be intrigued by the search for notes hidden in hidden places. Any one hundred percent collected record (and they can be from 2 or more parts) gives access to a photo or picture describing the different qualities of the First World War — from propaganda to equipment and tools.

The rest — the obvious run from point to point, conversations with comrades in arms and small ability to interact with the environment. But the game doesn’t actually spoil the game — it’s not about that: here the story of two ordinary people in the war comes first.11-11: Memories Retold Game ReviewThe cat and the dove are another participants in this story.

There is always a choice

One of the main tools for presenting the plot is a unique visual style imitating the sketch with alkyd paints. In general, you yourself see everything. But keep in mind that screenshots are hardly able to convey all the beauty of what is happening — in dynamics it looks much prettier. The music did not let us down either — it perfectly emphasizes the state of the main characters and at the right moments creates the atmosphere that is necessary for this or that scene.

A peaceful city far from war or a gas attack nightmare, a quiet farm in the midst of pastoral landscapes or front-line everyday life in trenches flooded with water — the effect of presence is always on top, despite the rather weak schedule.

The game very much resembles a movie, but the movie is still interactive. There is an opportunity to influence the main actions, making a choice for Kurt or Harry. In general, sometimes this variation is only an illusion, and in fact in the plot only a couple of phrases or actions will be exchanged.

The story itself, if we continue the analogy with the cinema, to match not the contemporary bestsellers with a bunch of effects or artsy art house, but paintings from the middle of the last century. The usual formulation, the stable speech of the main characters, a certain naivety and, maybe, even the fabulousness of what is happening — sometimes it becomes annoying, the closer to the end, the more. I want to see a bit more realism in the actions and motives of the characters. But the last chapter puts everything in its place — despite predictability, the ending is very dramatic. Here the player will have to make the most important choice, on which the fate of the main characters and their loved ones depend.

It turned out very much — you can forgive the finishing stage 11-11: Memories Retold all the shortcomings.11-11: Memories Retold Game ReviewShould rescue your own enemy? Well, does a person become an opponent only because there is a different form on it and he speaks in a foreign language? *** Not so long ago, on November 11, in Paris, memorable events were held on the occasion of the centenary anniversary of the end of the First World War. Europe still remembers so long-standing events, regardless of the past years. AND 11-11: Memories Retold, Naturally, it is designed specifically for the Western public, but for us this topic is far from being so fundamental — although Our Motherland took part in the First World War, we are closer to another Great War.

Nevertheless, this doesn’t prevent you from getting pleasure from the passage and empathizing with the main characters.

Pros: wonderful music; a touching story about ordinary people in war; beautiful visual style; variability of passage.

Minuses: sometimes the plot seems very trusting and simplistic; same gameplay.
